Howzat? UEL student called up for England cricket tour

Tuesday 20 December 2011

Tymal Mills

A UEL student has been selected for the England Lions cricket squad, which will begin a tour of Bangladesh in January.

Tymal Mills, who is a BA (Hons) Sports Journalism student and comes from Brandon in Suffolk, currently plays cricket for Essex County Cricket Club. All 16 members of the Lions squad were selected on the England Performance Programme in October and have spent the first part of the winter training at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough and have also completed training in India and South Africa.

Speaking in response to Monday’s announcement, Tymal said: “I wasn’t expecting to be called up if I’m honest, so it’s come as a really nice surprise just before Christmas. I’ve worked hard and hopefully that has made the difference. I’m now just really looking forward to going on tour in the New Year.”

Professor Patrick McGhee, UEL Vice-Chancellor, said: “This is wonderful news and clearly shows Tymal is in the selectors’ minds for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, which is also the year we aim to become the number one university for sport in London. With people of Tymal’s calibre and the level of investment and support we are committing to sport here at UEL, I can really see that aspiration becoming a reality.”

The University of East London is planning to relaunch cricket as one of the main sports for students and is currently in discussions with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Wanstead and Snaresbrook Cricket Club, about holding an indoor tournament in the early part of 2012.
