UEL announces unprecedented bursary offer to local schools and colleges

Tuesday 29 November 2011

Young people in east and south east London could be eligible for a £3,000 bursary if they choose to study a full-time undergraduate course at the University of East London next September.

UEL has selected 19 partner schools and colleges in Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest, for the first year of this programme (see notes to editors). The UEL National Scholarship Programme (NSP) Bursary gives eligible students £1,000 in cash during their first year of study and a further £2,000 of credits, which can be used throughout their degree to pay for books, materials, accommodation and travel.

The NSP Bursary is in addition to a range of other financial support measures. Students will still have access to student loans and, depending on their family income; they could be eligible for a grant. All full-time home undergraduate students are eligible to receive the standard UEL Progress Bursary, which is worth £500 in year one and £300 per year in years two and three. Students qualifying for the University of East London NSP Bursary will have an additional £2,000 added to their progress bursary at the start of year one.

Selena Bolingbroke, UEL Pro Vice-Chancellor, said: “UEL will double its spending on bursaries, scholarships and outreach work with hard to reach communities over the next four years. We are giving our students bursaries rather than fee waivers because they put cash into their pockets when they need it the most- especially if they don’t have access to the bank of mum and dad.”

Cathy Walsh, Principal & CEO of Barking & Dagenham College, praised the announcement saying: “This commitment from the University of East London to double its spending on financial support should be commended. It will make a significant difference to so many learners who have the talent and ambition to study at a higher level."

Students who progress from the 19 partner schools and colleges and select UEL as their first choice university will be eligible for the £3,000 bursary if their declared household income is less than £25,000 per year. For full details of the bursary offer including eligibility criteria, contact the Student Money Advice and Rights Team (SMART) at smart@uel.ac.uk or 020 8223 6200.

The University of East London is holding an open day at both its Stratford and Docklands Campuses on Wednesday, 7 December between 4.00pm and 7.00pm. There will be members of the SMART Team on hand at the open day to answer questions about the bursary offer and any other student finance queries.
