University of East London fine art graduate has had works chosen to appear at two major exhibitions this month.
Mark Lawrence, who graduated from UEL last year with an MA in fine art, has been selected to exhibit at both the Jerwood Drawing Prize and the ING Discerning Eye exhibitions.
The Jerwood Drawing Prize, originally the Cheltenham Open Drawing Exhibition, was established in 1996 to promote and celebrate the work of talented emerging artists across the disciplines of drawing, painting, sculpture, applied arts, photography and moving image. Over 3,500 applications were submitted for the competition, of which only 60 were selected for exhibition, including Mark’s piece ‘Untitled’ ink on discarded etching newsprint.
The winning entries were chosen by a panel of experts comprising Director of Whitechapel gallery Iwona Blazwick; writer, broadcaster and Director of Exhibitions at White Cube gallery, Tim Marlow, and artist Rachel Whiteread.
The exhibition will run at Jerwood Visual Arts gallery in central London until 30 October before touring nationally.
Mark has also been chosen to exhibit at the ING Discerning Eye exhibition, which runs from 10 to 20 November at the Mall Galleries, also in central London.
The exhibition which provides an unusual opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally recognised names, is judged by an esteemed panel including gallery manager John Deston and art critic Brian Sewell.
Mark said: “It’s encouraging for me as an artist that graduated from UEL just last year to have gained some recognition by being selected for these two exhibitions of note. The works in the exhibitions were created whilst studying for the MA Fine Art in 2010, so hopefully this might reaffirm that for fine art students at UEL there are opportunities out there for your work to be exhibited professionally.”
