UEL student creates open-air art cinema at Docklands campus

Monday 12 September 2011

Description goes here

UEL MA Fine Art student, Leezac Robinson has taken an unremarkable piece of wasteland underneath the Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge at the eastern end of the University of East London's Docklands campus and, with the help of an army of volunteers, transformed it into a unique and exciting arts space.

What was at one time just rubble has been professionally decked with a sloped access-way and a colourful and specially commissioned mural covering what was
previously a vandalised and graffiti-covered brick wall.

Leezac and his team have installed projectors onto the underside of the bridge and (with the assistance of a small boat) attached a makeshift cinema
screen between two of the bridge support struts. The intention is to launch a free evening schedule of outdoor moving image exhibitions, projected both
onto the screen and onto the water.

Leezac also runs The People's Republic Film Society, which describes itself as an organisation founded to create original film, celebrate international cinema, to recognise
and support new filmmakers and to enhance awareness, accessibility and understanding of the art among a broad and diverse film-going audience.

He said of the Watching on Water project: "This original immersive art installation has transformed an eyesore into a romantic, tranquil atmosphere
using sustainable materials and energy which allows for creative thinking, cultural learning, social interaction and an appreciation for experimental
16mm feature film and the great silent age of Hollywood."

A launch event was successfully held in August and now a series of free events is planned, starting at 6pm on Friday, 16 September.
