UEL graduate Lucy Tomlins has won the prestigious Battersea Park Sculpture award for her piece entitled, 'Concrete Country', a representation of a twice life-sized fence and stile, cast in white concrete.
Lucy's sculpture was officially unveiled outside the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park at a private view this week and will remain on display for a year.
She says of her work that whilst the park operates as a space for the public to experience nature in the city, the fence and stile is a man-made intervention to mark routes through which the public can venture freely in the countryside. The exchange between city and country is further expressed through the material transformation from wood to concrete, this subtle interplay is further enhanced by the imprint of wood grain left visible on the sculpture.
Speaking about the commission, she said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to see how the public respond to my work and how the sculpture reacts to the environment of the park over the year. The seasonal changes in light and colour will completely transform the piece and it will be interesting for regular visitors to the park to observe this evolving relationship with the environment.”
The award is made by the Friends of Battersea Park in collaboration with the Royal College of Art (RCA) where Lucy is now studying for her MA in sculpture.
