As part of the University of East London’s Fresher’s Week celebrations, chefs from Jamie Oliver’s ‘Jamie’s Ministry of Food’ have been to Docklands Campus to show students how to make delicious food, quickly and inexpensively.
Chefs drew crowds to marquees on the lawn at the University campus where onlookers were given the chance to sample dishes created before their eyes, including ‘Chill Con Jamie’ and Chicken Chow Mein.
Jamie’s Ministry of Food, Stratford, is the first such initiative in London, teaching recipes created by Jamie Oliver to provide people with the skills to cook simple and delicious foods, making cooking the normal, easy and enjoyable option.
The decision to start the first officially ‘Ministry’ in Newham was taken because it is seen as a young, diverse and dynamic Olympic borough, described as the ‘natural home for the first ever Ministry of Food’.
Graham Curtis, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning, Teaching and Student Experience, who donned an apron and got stuck in with the making of the chicken chow mien, said: “It’s all too easy for students to rely on fast food these days but these sessions demonstrate that it’s far more rewarding, healthier and less expensive to learn to cook for yourself. It was great to have professional chefs from Jamie’s Ministry of Food on campus and the students really enjoyed themselves.”
Jamie’s Ministry of Food will be starting classes from Thursday 6 October at UEL’s Stratford campus between 12-2pm and 2-4pm in the Cass School of Education and Communities Building.
