Golden performance by UEL students at European rowing championships

UEL Rowing Champions

Two UEL sports scholarship students have scooped gold medals at the European Universities Rowing Championships in Moscow.

In what turned out to be a memorable debut outing for UEL at the championships, John Collins and Alan Sinclair put in a pulsating performance for the Great Britain Universities Team, to emerge victorious over Germany in last Friday’s men's double sculls final.

The seventh annual championships, which took place at the Krylatskoe Canoeing and Rowing Course in Moscow last week, attracted students from around the world - with 10 universities providing rowers for the British team.

John Collins, who has represented the GB Rowing Team at the last two successive World Rowing U23 Championships, said: "We're absolutely thrilled to have come out on top in this event. It was a tough race and we have to give credit to our opponents who pushed us all the way. We've trained really hard for this and I'm just glad our hard work has paid off."

Alan Sinclair, said: "It's been a great week and we managed to raise our game for the final. Having had a successful year, this was the perfect way to lead us into the Olympic season. The support UEL has given us has been invaluable and I don't think we could have enjoyed this success without their backing."

David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL, said: “We are so pleased with the dedication and commitment shown by the lads. Their performances were instrumental this year in helping UEL become the most improved university for sport in 2011 across the UK and go some way towards us achieving our ambition of being the number one sporting university in London within the next four years.”

The GB Universities team claimed third place at the 2011 European Universities Rowing Championships, after collecting two gold, five silver, and four bronze medals in Moscow.
