UEL strikes Olympic deal with Team Singapore

Wednesday 3 August 2011

Signing the agreement

Team Singapore will use the University of East London as a base for their recovery centre during the 2012 London Olympic Games, in an agreement announced today by both organisations.

Representatives from the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) visited UEL’s Stratford Campus to sign the agreement, which outlines details for the Team Singapore recovery centre to provide high performance athletic services to their athletes competing at the London 2012 Games. In addition, the recovery centre will also house the Team Singapore Athletes’ Lounge, UEL will also provide accommodation for medical support staff during the Games.

This is the second deal UEL has brokered with a 2012 Olympic team. Last year Team USA signed an agreement to use the brand new, state-of-the-art SportsDock facility at UEL’s Docklands Campus during the Games for their sport performance and operational base. Team USA will also be setting up onsite sports science, medicine and media centres. The £21million SportsDock is due to open in Spring 2012.

UEL Pro Vice-Chancellor, Selena Bolingbroke, welcomed the deal saying: "UEL is delighted to host Team Singapore during the London 2012 Games and add to our growing number of Olympic partners who will operate from our campuses next year. The partnership is also an opportunity to build the legacy that will continue beyond 2012 and into the future, to boost participation in sport and meet UEL’s aim of being the best university in London for sport by 2015."

SSC’s Chief of Sports Development and Singapore Sports Institute, Bob Gambardella, agreed, commenting: “We are delighted to have secured the University of East London as the location for the Team Singapore recovery centre.  Its close proximity to the Athletes’ Village and great facilities allow us to provide seamless and holistic recovery support for all our athletes competing in the Games next year.”
