UEL Rowers at the Henley Royal Regatta

Three UEL sports scholarship students put in blistering performances at this year’s Henley Royal Regatta to win both the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup and the Visitors' Challenge Cup.

The Henley Royal Regatta, an event which has been described as the rowing equivalent of the FA Cup, has attracted top athletes from all over the world and is an event that is spread over five days and plays host to crowds of up to 4,000 people.

Alan Sinclair and John Collins, along with two further members in Leander Club A team, beat The Tideway Scullers' School A in rowing’s Quadruple Scull, to land the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup.

Speaking directly after what turned out to be a thrilling final, Alan Sinclair, said: “This win is so overwhelming. I have looked forward to this moment for so many years and now that it’s come, I still can’t believe it. We had a superb week and I couldn’t be happier.”

In a completely different event, John Preston joined his fellow four-man team members in the men’s coxless four, to see Leander Club and Imperial College London beat the National University of Ireland, Galway and Gráinne Mhaol Boat Club, Ireland crew, by three lengths to scoop the Visitors' Challenge Cup.
Following this sterling performance, both Alan Sinclair and John Collins will turn their attentions to the European Universities Rowing Championship in Moscow at the end of August, in which they will be representing UEL.

David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL, said: “This is yet another fantastic performance from UEL sports students at a major rowing event and is further evidence to support our drive to become the number one university for sport in London by 2015. I’d like to wish the guys the best of luck in Moscow later this month.”
