UEL expects record number of summer applications

Thursday 18 August 2011

Clearing Hotline

With student satisfaction ratings at an all time high and the demand for university places showing no sign of easing, The University of East London is urging students to act fast to secure a place in September 2011.

As many students expect to receive their eagerly anticipated A-Level results this morning, UEL is expecting a flood of calls to its Clearing Centre at the Docklands Campus from prospective students.

While there are lots of courses that are not yet full, places are filling quickly. A number of popular courses are already full including social work.

In the past two years, the University of East London has seen a rise in UCAS applications of 47 per cent and 12 per cent in the past year alone. On results day last year, UEL received over 9,000 calls to the clearing hotline, with 1,000 calls alone in the first half hour of lines opening.

This year, operations have been scaled up to cope with anticipated demand - 170 phone lines are available in the specially designed Clearing Centre, making it one of the largest in the UK.

As applicants will naturally be keen to confirm a place as soon as possible, admissions staff members are hosting an applicant day on Saturday, 20 August 2011 at both its Stratford and Docklands Campuses. Applicants will be able to speak to academic members of staff about their course, view the facilities, receive an offer and accept that offer on the day, by accessing the UCAS system on-site. Applicants will also be able to make their initial funding application to Student Finance England under the guidance of experts from the Student Money Advice and Rights Team.

Emma Burchfield, who is UEL’s Head of Student Admissions, said, “Applicants may feel disheartened and think that they won’t get a place this year. However, it is important they realise that there are still some places out there. You won’t know unless you call, so do your research, work out your plan of action and get on the phone or visit us here at the Docklands Campus.”

Phone lines open today in UEL at 8.00am and will be open to 8.00pm on Thursday and Friday. Prospective students should contact the clearing hotline on 020 8223 3333.

The National Student Survey (NSS) results released by Ipsos MORI yesterday confirmed student satisfaction is now at an all time high of 81 per cent and is further evidence to cement the University of East London’s emerging reputation. This latest poll marks a sizeable five per cent increase from last year’s score of 76 per cent.
