UEL student given 10-1 odds that he’ll win the Turner Prize by 50

Tuesday 19 July 2011

Roger Molloy

UEL photography student, Roger Molloy, has managed to secure odds with high street bookmakers William Hill, that he’ll win the Turner Prize by the time he hits 50.

The first year BA (Hons) photography student has opened the book on himself with a £10 bet and has the slip to prove it. William Hill does not give out odds on any bet without first considering the probabilities involved and so Roger is very encouraged by his 10-1 odds, he said: “The only way to know what your odds are of winning something is to actually get your odds! Once you have that you can then work towards improving them."

Roger, who began his photography career working at Butlins and on cruise liners, made the news three and half years ago when he turned his front door and then his front room into an art exhibition following the theft of camera equipment. He has more recently been working on a project involving UEL honorary doctorate holders and former Turner Prize nominees themselves, Gilbert and George.

East London born and bred, he says of his first year at UEL: “I’m proud to be a student here and am really happy with the support the University and the tutors have given me, my mum did her degree at the then North London Poly, so it feels like a family to me." Roger, 35, whose ambition is to be represented by a well-known gallery, has 15 years to make good on his bet but hopes to collect his winnings much sooner.
