UEL unveils plans for new university library in the heart of Stratford

Thursday 28 July 2011

The University of East London has announced plans to construct a new state-of-the-art, 24/7 library and learning centre on its Stratford Campus.

Due for completion in early 2013, the £14.7 million Stratford Library will transform the experience of UEL students from the borough of Newham and beyond with an attractive, inspirational and flexible learning and research environment.

As seen in the fly-through video produced by Hopkins Architects (above), the Library will boast 3 floors and 4,200 square metres of high-quality learning spaces. It will incorporate a comprehensive collection of some 130,000 books on its upper levels relating to the four Stratford-based Schools: Health, Sport and Biosciences; Law and Social Sciences; Psychology; and the Cass School of Education and Communities. As well as the quiet study spaces required by our students, there will be social and collaborative learning areas, group study rooms and a café.

The Library will boast the latest technology with an advanced digital library, self-issue and return services and an automatic book sorter. The interior will be enhanced by a landscaped internal garden situated within a central atrium.

Mark Janko, Project Manager for the new library, said: “The design team have provided a piece of architecture which meets both the brief and budget. As well as providing superb learning spaces, the new library also promises to meet UEL’s green agenda.”

Following a successful planning approval grant from the London Borough of Newham Planning Committee in May, construction is expected to commence in autumn 2011.
