Mum’s the word for new UEL course

The new post-graduate Diploma in Career Coaching at the University of East London could be just the ticket for mums who are looking to rejuvenate their career.

With the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) anticipating 1.6m job losses over the next three years and the new All-Age Careers Service set to be launched by the Government in 2012, the need for well-qualified Career Coaches has never been greater.

The Diploma in Career Coaching, which is the first of its kind in the UK and will start this September, offers students the chance to develop practical skills supported by a strong theoretical basis, which will equip them to provide an effective and credible service to clients.

A common problem many women encounter after having children is finding the door on their previous career has closed because it doesn’t give them the flexibility to combine work and motherhood. UEL’s landmark course allows students to learn the theories and skills from the comfort of their own home through podcast lectures, online discussions and skype tutorials. This means mothers of young children get the chance to retrain and work in an ever-growing field, which at the same time, will not conflict with their childcare responsibilities.

Julia Yates, course director of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Career Coaching at the University of East London, said: “Many women start to think about their own career paths when their children start nursery or school. Unfortunately, there are few options that allow them to combine study and work around nursery hours and childcare responsibilities. With that in mind, we are thrilled to be able to offer this post-graduate course that will allow women to fulfil their academic potential, while continuing to play mum at home.”
