UEL is proud to have signed up to the Sustainable Fish City pledge, showing that we are working towards serving only sustainable fish on campus.

Sustainable Fish City is an initiative conceived and supportedby an alliance of not-for-profit organisations already working on sustainable seafood issues. The aim is for London to become the first ever Sustainable Fish City, to show what can be done if people and organisations make a concerted effort to change their buying habits.

The majority of the fish sold in UEL cafes is MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified. That means that it comes from sustainable stocks, and doesn’t have a negative impact on ocean life. By 2012 the University aims to sell only MSC fish as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability.

Sara Kassam, Energy and Environment Manager, said: “:People are eating more fish than they used to, anda lotof it is being caught by destructive methods. The world is now seriously at risk of losing some species from our seas forever so it’s really important that a large organisation like UEL is getting behind this initiative.”
