The University of East London (UEL) is launching an online version of its long established post-graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance course – the first of its type in England.

From September 2011, professionals - particularly school teachers - who are interested in training to be a careers adviser, can complete much of the two year course from home, making it far easier to combine with full-time work and other commitments. Graduates from this two year course will be able to explore a host of exciting career opportunities in schools, colleges, universities and the private sector. During the half-term holidays, students will be invited in for face-to-face teaching sessions.

This is a course that has attracted many teachers and classroom assistants looking for a career change, as the role has allowed them to continue to work with young people and utilise the invaluable experience and range of skills they have acquired throughout their teaching career.

Anthony Fitzgerald, who finished his course in 2008, said: “As a French teacher, I loved working with the students but felt the job took over my life. As a Careers Adviser, I get to work with young people in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. However, when I leave the office; my work is done. And any discipline issues; I just hand them over to the teachers.”

Nelica La Gro, Course Director, said: “Tutors have been impressed with students from teaching backgrounds because of their excellent range of skills. We’re always delighted to see applicants who have worked in schools, as they tend to show a real understanding of young people and are often great problem solvers.”

The government recently announced that from April 2012, England will have an all-age guidance service, so there will be many more opportunities for careers advisers to work with a range of clients. This new distance learning mode of study will allow more teachers and other professionals to make a move into this sector.
