After six months of preparation, the University of East London’s Students’ Union – in partnership with Tower Hamlets and Newham mental health charity Mind – launched their Do U Mind film and art exhibition this month at a special event held at Stratford Circus.
The Students’ Union also collaborated with Anointed Productions and East London NHS Foundation Trust, with funding from NHS Newham, to showcase talent within the mental health community through the use of music, art, creative writing and performance. In addition, work produced for the exhibition helped to raise awareness of the various issues which surround mental health problems. The event, which took place on Friday 17 June, enjoyed a diverse audience, with guests including health professionals, commissioners, UEL staff and students, and members of the public.
SU Volunteers and Community Development Co-Ordinator, Shahida Aslam, said: “We were delighted with the outcome of the project. For a lot of the performers it was their first time in front of an audience, meaning they had to step out of their comfort zone. The students involved with the project, along with the services users, showed tremendous commitment and enthusiasm. I am therefore keen to develop further projects like this in the future, and welcome new partnerships.”
