A superb performance by four UEL scholarship students at the recent British Universities & Colleges Sport, (BUCS) rowing regatta, has boosted their chances of taking part in this summer’s European University Rowing Championships in Moscow.
In what were extremely tough conditions, the team collected an impressive haul of three gold medals and one silver medal for their efforts in a range of individual and team events at the regatta in Nottingham. The team members were John Collins (School of Humanities and Social Sciences), Alan Sinclair (School of Psychology) and John Preston and Ed Whiteley, who are both students in the Royal Docks Business School.
David Cosford, Director of Sport, at UEL said: “These students have represented UEL in an extremely professional manner and I’m delighted with their performance. What really impresses me is the fact they have competed in so many events, which shows great determination and character on their part.
“They achieved the most successful performance in sculling events by any university - outperforming the usual dominance of Durham, Newcastle, Imperial, Reading, Oxford Brookes and more recently Queens Belfast. They are now in with a chance of representing UEL in Moscow later this summer and I believe this sterling effort has taken them a considerable step closer.”
Natalie Campbell, President of the UEL Rowing Club said: “The team has really helped put the UEL Boating Club on the map in terms of attracting high quality rowers to our university – and to the east London rowing community. I’m very excited about the future of rowing at UEL and the prospect of our guys visiting Moscow this summer to compete at the highest level. I’m sure they will do us proud.”
