UEL rowing student makes Great Britain World Cup team

Friday 27 May 2011

John Preston

UEL scholarship student, John Preston, will have the proud honour of representing Great Britain in this weekend’s World Rowing Cup in Germany. John and his fellow team members will be pitted against world-class opposition in the Lightweight Men’s four event. The competition takes place in Munich between 27 and 29 May.

John’s call up to the Great Britain team caps an impressive fortnight for UEL rowing students. A superb performance by four UEL scholarship students – including John Preston - at the recent British Universities & Colleges Sport, (BUCS) rowing regatta, has boosted their chances of taking part in this summer’s European University Rowing Championships in Moscow. In what were extremely tough conditions, the team collected an impressive haul of three gold medals and one silver medal for their efforts in a range of individual and team events at the regatta in Nottingham.

Speaking ahead of the competition, John said: “The World Cup represents an amazing opportunity for our team and racing at a level higher will be a great learning experience. It’s also a fantastic opportunity to race against some of the fastest lightweights in the world - most of whom will be competing in next year’s London 2012 Games. This is the first time ever that Great Britain has entered two lightweight fours in this Olympic class event; it just remains for us to go and do the business later this week.”

David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL, said: “This marks a fantastic few weeks for our rowing students. I’m delighted for John and I wish him the very best for this week’s event in Germany – I’m sure he will do Great Britain and UEL proud.”
John Preston is a student in the Royal Docks Business School. People can follow John’s performance on Twitter - @johnadpreston
