Jacqueline Rose

Esteemed academic and critically acclaimed author, Jacqueline Rose, will be speaking at the University of East London's Centre for Cultural Studies Research on Wednesday 1 June.

The lecture, to be held in the West Building on the University's Docklands campus, will be entitled Total Belief Delirium in the West and will address issues of truth and falsehood, belief and disbelief in relationship to celebrated 20th century political theorist, Hannah Arendt's, analysis of totalitarianism in the Third Reich.

By focusing on one of the darkest moments of European history, Rose wil suggest that those who all too quickly ascribe the category of the religious fanatic or extremist to distant cultures and worlds have much to learn from some of the most intense and transformative deliriums of the West.

Rose is internationally known for her writing on feminism, psychoanalysis, literature and more recently on the politics and ideology of Israel-Palestine. Her books include Sexuality in the Field of Vision, The Haunting of Sylvia Plath, States of Fantasy, On Not Being Able to Sleep: Psychoanalysis and the Modern World, The Question of Zion, The Last Resistance and the novel Albertine.

A regular writer for the London Review of Books, she wrote and presented the Channel 4 documentary, Dangerous Liaison: Israel and the United States. She is a co-founder of Independent Jewish Voices in the UK and a Fellow of the British Academy.

The event is free to all and takes place in the Ground Floor Lecture Theatre in the West Building from 5.30pm on Wednesday 1 June.
