UEL’s Centre of Excellence for Women’s Entrepreneurship (CEWE) staged an event last week entitled ‘The Step from Employment to Self Employment’. The event, one of a series being run by the centre, was hosted by businesswoman and former London Docklands Development Corporation Director Sunny Crouch OBE.
Guest speakers on the evening were networking guru and founder of Smarter Networking, Heather White, and Dr Jonathan Passmore, esteemed coach and programme leader for the Coaching Psychology programme at UEL.
Heather told the packed room to ‘network to give you confidence’, adding that ‘the more you get out there and meet people the easier it becomes’. While Dr Passmore compared successful entrepreneurs to professional surfers, saying: ‘They are like surfers who wait for a wave. They make a judgment call, start to paddle and catch the wave and ride it.’
The centre was set up to bring together existing networks and support services to enable women entrepreneurs to access the assistance they need to grow their business through mentoring, networking opportunities and access to expertise. The University of East London aims to be the number one university in Europe for women’s entrepreneurship by the end of the decade.
