Demand for high quality career coaching in the UK looks set to increase dramatically with the government’s announcement of an all-age guidance service to be implemented in April 2012 and predictions of 1.6m job losses over the next 3 years.
The University of East London (UEL) has responded to this by launching a new post-graduate Diploma in Career Coaching due to start in September 2011. The course will offer students the chance to develop practical skills supported by a strong theoretical basis that will equip them to provide an effective and credible service to clients.
Anyone can set themselves up as a career coach. It is a growing but unregulated profession. Until now the most in depth face to face training on offer for career coaches in the UK has been a one day course. Now, for the first time, those interested in a career supporting people with their career decisions and development have the chance to take a specialist academic course.
Much of the teaching will be accessible online, but the distance learning elements will be supplemented by intensive “skills schools” aiming to give students first class practical skills and a strong network of peers. The teaching staff include renowned academics from both coaching and career disciplines, and are supported by practitioners with recent experience of coaching themselves.
Coaches and clients will welcome the introduction of this post-graduate Diploma as a way to identify Career Coaches whose training is evidence-based and career-specific. “The coaching community have been crying out for a course that will give practitioners and the profession as a whole some real credibility.” says Julia Yates, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at UEL.
A conference, comprising key note speakers and masterclasses in some key coaching techniques is being held at UEL on 17th May for people to find out more. Details available here and for further information on the course, contact Julia Yates at j.c.yates@uel.ac.uk
