University of East London academic, Dr Ravindra Jayaratne, has been invited to participate in the SET for BRITAIN competition and exhibition to take place at the House of Commons on Monday 14 March.
Dr Jayaratne’s pioneering and innovative work around the scientific study of beach deformation has been recognised by the event organisers and will be presented as a detailed poster during the exhibition.
The research entitled ‘A simple computer model for beach deformation’ enables a standard desktop computer to create a detailed simulation of the effects of coastal erosion and is capable of simulating the effects of a 100 hour storm in just a matter of minutes.
Far from being simply an academic study, the model can assist scientists to have a far greater understanding of the morphological behaviour of coastal processes, which, in turn, can help prevent coastal flooding, protect economic activities such as commercial ports and harbours and help develop coastal areas for leisure, recreation and marine life.
The aim of SET for BRITAIN is to encourage, support and promote Britain's early-stage and early-career research scientists, engineers and technologists, who the organisers describe as ‘the ‘engine-room’ of continued progress in and development of UK research and R&D, and ultimately of UK plc’.
The competition comprises of a two-hour poster exhibition and judging session during the day, ending with a reception and prize-giving.
Dr Jayaratne said: “Prediction of beach deformation is open to considerable uncertainty, and developing a model to satisfactory levels at a low cost is a challenging task. I am delighted about this great opportunity to present my research work at the House of Commons and it makes me feel that my work has been recognised and appreciated.”
