Four of the University of East London’s sports teams won in their quarter-final games at the British Universities and Colleges Sport event on Wednesday, taking them through to the semi-finals next month.

The Men’s Basketball first team flipped Westminster right round in a resounding 69-96 victory, while the Men’s football first team beat St Mary’s University College one-nil. UEL’s basketball team will meet Essex University first team in the semi-finals, while the footballers will play Portsmouth University; both fixtures take place on the 9 March.

Meanwhile, both the Men’s and Women’s volleyball teams beat their opponents, Reading University and Chichester University two-one, and will face Surrey and Portsmouth respectively on the same date. For the Women’s volleyball team, this was their debut fixture.

Darren Wiltshire, Captain of the University’s Men's Football first Team, said: “It was a great team effort for the first team to go away from home and turn over a really strong team like St Mary's.

Dexter Babalola got the winner with about 10 minutes to go and despite a lot of pressure, we held on to the win. There were 114 teams in the competition, so to get down to the last 4 is a big achievement for us.”

The University of East London is committed to supporting its sports men and women and aims to be recognised as the number one university in London for sport within the next four years.
