Students at UEL Alumni Creative Arts Event

Over 250 University of East London alumni, students, staff and industry guests gathered for the Made in East London creative arts event last week at the Islington Metal Works. The 3rd annual event in the UEL Creative Arts Industries Series was the combined curatorial project of the University’s School of Architecture and the Visual Arts and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (Institute of Performing Arts).

A huge range of talent was on display for one night only, bringing together the work of fine artists, photographers, fashion designers, musicians, filmmakers, architects, writers, dancers and designers. Amongst the performances were readings by creative writing graduates, an experimental cello recital and an interactive demonstration from computer games designers.

The fine artists held an exhibition on the first floor using animal carcasses flooded with light and suspended in a caged platform, while the cinema room showed a large range of films from students taking film and media-based courses.

Guests were welcomed with speeches from UEL Vice Chancellor, Professor Patrick McGhee, Acting Dean of School of Architecture and Visual Arts, Pete Cobb, and Head of Alumni Development, Dr Fariba Salehi.

Pete Cobb said: “The event showed the range and quality of creative work emanating from the different schools at UEL. The number of alumni who attended and are active as practitioners within the varied fields demonstrates the contribution that our graduates have made to the creative and digital sector, one of the key elements that make London a global cultural centre.”

Dr Fariba Salehi, Head of Alumni Development said: “I am delighted to see that each year we have a bigger turn out. This year nearly 250 students, alumni, staff and Friends of UEL attended to view the wonderful range of creative art productions of our students and alumni in the fields of Fine Arts, Architecture and Performing Arts who ‘exhibited’ their work in the multiple spaces of this fascinating venue.”

Mark Hunter, Senior Lecturer from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, said: “Made in East London celebrated collaboration across Schools and art forms, showcasing the best in original creative arts practice at UEL."
