Keeping green

The University of East London has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard, demonstrating that it has taken real action on climate change by reducing its carbon emissions.

The Carbon Trust Standard was developed by the Carbon Trust, a company set up by the Government to help businesses and public organisations to reduce their emissions.

Sara Kassam, UEL Energy and Environment Manager: “This is something we can really celebrate. It is great to receive recognition like this for everything that staff and students have been doing to save energy.”

"The standard shows that we are taking action ourselves by reducing the carbon emissions that we are directly responsible for rather than just paying others to off-set our emissions”.

Some of the projects that have enabled UEL to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard include the installation of new heating controls, efficient condensing boilers, additional insulation, improved lighting controls, renewable technologies (solar photovoltaic cells and a wind turbine) and optimisation of building management systems.

In order to maintain the Carbon Trust Standard, the University must recertify every two years, this means it has to continue to keep reducing its impact on the environment.

To find out how you can do your bit and how environmentally switched-on you are play the Great Green Scheme game here and get involved in the University’s action on climate change.
