UEL’s inaugural sports scholarships were awarded to student athletes on Wednesday in honour of their outstanding achievements over the last year.
The scholarships were presented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Patrick McGhee to 24 of UEL’s top-ranking athletes ranging from cricketers to taekwondo champions, all of whom having competed nationally or internationally in their chosen sport.
In accepting the scholarship, the athletes thanked the University for its continuous support and for its commitment to their sporting careers.
Jeffrey Lawal Balogun, UEL’s star 200m sprinter, said: “the University really gives us the support so that we can develop our sport. The scholarships will help us finance activities like training and travelling, but they will also make sure we balance our workload of lectures and training.”
Basketball player, Jamell Anderson, said: “Without this scholarship I would not be able to afford to attend training and tournaments, as sometimes they are quite far away and even abroad.”
Director of Sport at UEL, David Cosford praised the athletes for their hard work and commitment, pledging the University’s commitment to their professional development and reiterating UEL’s ambitions to become the number one university for sport in London within the next five years.
