UEL Governor receives life peerage

Monday 13 December 2010

Governor Raj Loomba CBE

Governor Raj Loomba CBE has been awarded a life-peerage by Her Majesty the Queen.

Lord Loomba CBE, a respected philanthropist and hugely successful businessman, joined the University of East London’s board of trustees in 2008, the same year he was awarded the CBE.

His meteoric rise in the fashion and clothing retail industry had humble beginnings when, in the 1960’s, he opened a market stall in Widnes, Cheshire. Today his company employs 300 people in the UK, China and India– though the Widnes market stall remains operational.

A tireless campaigner for the rights and well-being of widows in India and around the world, Lord Loomba CBE, along with his wife, Veena Loomba, established the Loomba Foundation in 1997 to provide aid and raise awareness of the plight of widows.

Lord Loomba CBE was nominated for a peerage by the Liberal Democrat party, and said: “I am incredibly humbled to have been honoured by Her Majesty in this way. I hope to use my position in the Lords for the greater good of society.”
