The University of East London’s rowing team has enjoyed its first taste of success thanks to competitor David Marshall, who picked up a silver medal at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) trials in October.
David, who picked up his medal in the single trials, was the second fastest student in all the 5K trials over the weekend, coming 8th overall. The team also narrowly missed a double, coming fourth in their competition on the Sunday.
David, who competed alongside fellow UEL student John Collins, who came 13th overall, said: “It was a solid weekend for both myself and John.I was happy to gain the first BUCS points in rowing for UEL. It would be great to see rowing become firmly established as a sport in which UEL is nationally recognised, I think we certainly have the talent”.
David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL, said “not only did the team do themselves proud but they made history by being the first boat ever to race for UELBC. With John and Dave both being at Leander, the most successful rowing club in Great Britain, UEL is looking to build a strong partnership with the club. These are exciting times for rowing at UEL”.
The University’s Docklands campus is also fortunate to have a full-length Regatta course right on its doorstep in the Royal Albert Dock.
