Jump your way into the history books at UEL!

Jump

Artist Clare Newton is inviting students and staff at UEL to launch a collaborative project which should not only make them an integral part of a major exhibition at ExCel during the London Olympics but also land them firmly in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Between November 2010 and the beginning of the London Olympics in 2012, Clare will be travelling throughout London collecting tens of thousands of images of people mid-jump for what will go on to make history as the world’s largest photograph, and she’s starting the whole thing off at UEL.

The final image could measure up to 5 metres high by 1.5 kilometres long and will use the very latest state-of-the-art technology to create. Each participant will be clearly identifiable in the final piece and contributors are invited to sign their image at the exhibition, which is expected to draw crowds from around the world.

Clare said: “The idea of this project is to be all-inclusive. UEL has a wonderfully diverse student population and as a former student I thought it would be great place to start the project off. I’m really hoping that as many students and staff as possible can come down and share in the making of history. Friends, family and local community groups are welcome to come down, too.”

Shahida Aslam, who is organising the events on behalf of UEL’s Student Union, said: “I was inspired by Clare’s enthusiasm for the project. I particularly liked it because of the synergy it offers with the University’s Interfaith Week, reflecting the diversity and multicultural faiths coming together and really making them part of London 2012 in such an unusual and innovative way.”

So, if you want to make history, all you have to do is turn up outside Oscar’s Bistro at the Docklands campus on 30 November or 2 December at 11.30am and get ready to jump your way into the Guinness Book of World Records!
