Transient Praxis Fashion Textile symposium brings international designers to UEL

Wednesday 17 November 2010

Sian Mooney 'Three sisters'

A Fashion Textile symposium will be held at the Architecture and Visual Arts (AVA) building at the University of East London’s Docklands campus on Thursday 18 November from 1pm until 6.45pm.

The first part of the event will be an opportunity for staff and students to listen to UEL staff Sian Mooney, Mika Nash, Vicki Fong and Lucy Jones talk about their own work as professional artists. This will be followed by presentations from textile artist Rhian Solomon, Professor Tom Klinkowstein and graphic design duo OKRM.

During the week, Pink Practice (a research cluster formed in July 2008 with staff from the Fashion and Textiles area and led by Visiting Research Professor Jane Harris) is holding an exhibition of their own work in the AVA building gallery space.

Rhian Solomon’s practice draws parallels between the visual arts and science. She is currently Artist in Residence at The University for the Creative Arts and is Visiting Lecturer for a number of Higher Education institutions.

Tom Klinkowstein is President and Creative Director of Media A, LLC, an internationally recognised design and consulting group with clients that include CondéNast, IBM, NASA and the Lincoln Center for the Arts in New York, among many others. His work has been shown in art centers, museums and galleries throughout the world.

Tom says of the event: “I’m thrilled to be the keynote speaker for the Transient Praxis symposium at the prestigious School of Architecture and the Visual Arts. It is most appropriate that I present and conduct a workshop on ' the Fractal Profession', the discipline that contains and becomes all others, to AVA students and faculty – already at the intersection of ideas and purpose from Design, Business and Social Innovation”.

Lucy Jones, Subject Director for Fashion Textiles and Chair of Pink Practice, said: “Our aim is to raise awareness of fashion and printed textiles research in the School, University, and in the wider context, and to celebrate the rich breadth, and energy that underpins our teaching in the Fashion Textiles area. We hope these exhibitions and symposiums will open up new dialogues across all areas within the school and University.”

Speeches will be followed by a ‘Question Time’-style discussion panel and will close with a networking opportunity for attendees.
