UEL dignitary publishes independent review of drug treatment in prisons

Friday 1 October 2010

Professor Lord Patel

Professor Lord Patel of Bradford, the Director of Strategic Partnerships and Senior Advisor to the Vice Chancellor at UEL, has been chairing an independent Prison Drug Treatment Strategy Review Group for the past 18 months.

Today a report that focuses on this work, specifically on drug treatment and interventions for people in prison, people moving between prisons and the continuity of care for people on release from prison has been published.  The report outlines the evidence gathered and work carried out by the Review Group and summarises its conclusions and recommendations.

The Government will now assess Lord Patel’s findings before deciding upon any future implementation of his recommendations.

Lord Patel said: “It has been an challenging and complex process and I would not only like to thank all of my colleagues for the invaluable assistance they have provided, but also the many services users, carers and families for their invaluable insights. This is an important public health issue both for those serving custodial sentences as well society as a whole. I feel we have made positive strides towards safeguarding the interests of both.”
