UEL staff and students asked to switch off and save energy

Tuesday 19 October 2010

National Energy Saving Week

Next Monday, 25 October, sees the launch of National Energy Saving Week and UEL’s Green Thing team is hoping that both staff and students will play their part.

The University will be running a ‘Switch Off’ campaign starting next week asking everyone who studies or works at UEL to be more vigilant when it comes to turning lights off in empty classrooms and lecture theatres, switching computer monitors off at the end of the day and generally making sure that electrical equipment isn’t left running wastefully in empty rooms.

Students are expected to get involved too with a Student Residences Energy Saving Competition to see which block can use the least energy per person during the course of the week. In order to reduce their energy consumption, students are encouraged to switch off lights when not in the room, appliances when not in use, put on layers instead of turning heating, etc. Each flat from the winning hall will be entered into a prize draw to win a meal at a local restaurant.

The Green Thing team also wants you to keep a look out for inefficient energy use in your own part of the campus and let them know about it.  Contact the Green Thing team on: greenthing@uel.ac.uk

Remember if it’s not being used – switch it off!
