UEL lecturer shortlisted for prestigious Arts Prize

Monday 12 July 2010

Mikey Georgeson's work

UEL lecturer Mikey Georgeson has been nominated for the prestigious John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize presented by the John Walker Gallery in Liverpool.

The prize is held in high esteem by the art world and has a grand tradition for promoting the exploration of painting. The short-listed works are presented anonymously to a jury made up of some of the most respected names in the art world, including Sir Norman Rosenthal and Turner Prize nominee Goshka Macuga. Submission is open to any UK artist while no preference is given to level of experience or to any particular practice or style of painting.

Due to its open nature, the competition attracts a huge number and broad spectrum of entries. This year nearly three thousand entries were received out of which just 45 were short-listed. The winning artist receives a £25,000 cash prize.

Mikey said of his nomination: “Being included in the 2010 John Moores exhibition means a lot to me as an artist due to its near mythic history in exploring possibilities in the act of painting. Being the son of an art teacher/painter from Liverpool makes it even more special”.

The winner is announced on September 16, while all 45 short-listed works will be exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool from 18 September until 3 January 2011.
