UEL appoints new Deputy Vice-Chancellor

John Joughin

The University of East London has appointed Professor John Joughin as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). The announcement was made by Mark Stephens, UEL’s Chair of Governors on Thursday, 1 July.

Professor Joughin is currently Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Professor of English Literature at the University of Central Lancashire and will take up the post on Wednesday, 1 September.

UEL Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patrick McGhee said, “We are very pleased to welcome Professor Joughin to UEL. His extensive knowledge and experience will be a great asset to the University in the years ahead.”

Professor Joughin has a first degree in English and European Literature from the University of Essex as well as a Masters degree in English and European Renaissance Drama from the University of Warwick and a doctorate from the University of Essex.

He joined the University of Central Lancashire in 1992 and he was previously appointed Head of Humanities (2003-05) and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (2005-09). Professor Joughin has a significant track record of experience of engagement with the Creative Industries; both as a Board member of Creative Lancashire (2007-10) and as a Member of the EU Think Tank on Digital Content (2009).

He is a well known Shakespeare scholar and a Member of the International Shakespeare Conference, 2000-2010. He has research interests in the areas of Shakespeare, Literature and Philosophy and Literary and Cultural Theory and was also the founding Chair of the British Shakespeare Association (2002-08).
