ExCel London won UEL’s Royal Docks Football Tournament this year beating last year’s winners by a margin of seven goals.
The tournament, which ran for the first time last year, came about from a desire to run an event in which all of the various organisations that work along the Royal Docks could be involved.
So far it has proved to be a real hit with teams including Newham University Hospital Trust, Newham Borough Council and ExCel taking part in a series of games held at Newham Sports Centre and played with the kind of fierce dedication and competitiveness that would put England’s recent efforts to shame.
David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL said: “It’s all about developing good relations with our neighbours on the Dock and sport is a good mechanism to enable this. We are looking for even more teams to sign up for this next year, if we could get teams from Tate and Lyle, City Airport and Canary Wharf group involved that would be great”.
Martin Avard from ExCel said: “This was ExCeL’s first year taking part. After losing the first game to last year’s winners Newham all of the players heads went down, but somehow we rallied and with the last round games going in our favour we won on goals scored. It was a really enjoyable and well organised event and we’re already looking forward to defending the cup next year”.
A trophy was presented to ExCel London which they will hold until they come to defend their title next year.
