UEL matches graduates with employers at Mega Day event

The University of East London brought a host of prospective employers and students together on Friday at an event in central London.

The event, which was branded as a Mega Day, brought students from a range of higher education institutions (HEIs) together with six key employers.

In December last year, a UEL-led collaborative bid on behalf of the KnowledgeEast HEI partnership was awarded funding to provide 500 internship opportunities for unemployed graduates; Friday’s event along with a similar one earlier in the year were designed to deliver on this promise.

Mark Faulkner, Employability Manager at UEL said: “Internships can prove an invaluable foot through the door for highly skilled graduates who are entering the workplace in challenging economic times, while an event like this can speed up the whole process of sending CVs to employers and then waiting to see if you get an interview”.

Marli Almeida, a law graduate from Queen Mary University of London, was offered an internship with Quickwall Construction, based at UEL. She said she found the event, ‘very useful, as it provided good interview experience as well as tips for how to write a winning CV and other self-promotion techniques’.

Abdul Tahid, a graduate in Business and Politics from the University of Greenwich, said he found the interview experience useful and was hoping for an internship with either Quickwall or Beautiful Communications.

Iveta Bruesova, an MBA graduate from the University of Greenwich described the event as ‘extremely worthwhile’, after securing an internship as a programme manager at HAFTrust (Hadlow Agro-Forestry Trust).

Edward Bell-King from HAFTrust says he came to the event looking for Java software developers having secured three internships at the previous event.

Over half the students who attended the event left at the end of the day with paid internships agreed.
