The University of East London (UEL) has been recognised by People & Planet in the 2010 ‘Green League’ for higher education institutions.
UEL was included in the Green League for the first time this year, and ranked in the second class for environmental performance. 133 institutions were judged on environmental policy, management and performance in areas such as carbon reduction, waste recycling, energy efficiency, transport emissions and sustainable procurement.
People & Planet is the largest UK student network campaigning to end world poverty, defend human rights and protect the environment. The Green League is produced as part of People & Planet's Going Greener campaign which aims to transform the environmental performance of the UK education sector.
UEL has a number of exciting environmental projects underway, including participation in the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme, an extensive recycling programme, solar and wind power initiatives at the Docklands campus, and the development of outdoor green spaces.
UEL’s Energy and Environment Manager, Sara Kassam says, “UEL has implemented a wide range of green initiatives and we are pleased to be recognised by People & Planet for our efforts. The University is committed to continuous improvement in this area and we hope to do even better in 2011.”
