The University of East London’s graduate fashion students will be exhibiting their end-of-year collections this Sunday at their very own catwalk show as part of this year’s Graduate Fashion Week.
The esteemed event, which takes place at Earls Court 2 and runs from Sunday 6 June to Thursday 10 June, traditionally provides a forum for the very best of student fashion and design talent, showcasing the work of some 50 universities.
The UEL catwalk show, which begins at 1pm on Sunday, will feature the collections of graduating students, some of whom are already beginning to make a name for themselves in the incredibly competitive world of high fashion.
Diana Gevorgian, originally from Armenia, works under the label name Gevorgian and has already generated interest from the fashion media for her collection, ‘If Looks Could Kill’ which contrasts black fitted leather suits and metal decorated footwear. Diana has also worked for Mark Jacobs in New York.
While during her placement at Belle Sauvage, Aimee Morris’ designed a dress for their collection, ‘Leopard by Belle Sauvage’ which has since gone into production. Aimee’s ‘Anatomical Armour’ collection is inspired by historical battle armour and uses leather panels and metal stud embellishment.
And one newspaper recently commented that, ‘the list of celebrities University of East London fashion designer Bunmi Olaye has dressed reads like a definitive list of who’s who in the celeb world’. Bunmi, who set up her own luxury womenswear label, Bunmi Koko, in 2009, has garnered an impressive celebrity fan base including among others Mischa Barton, Elizabeth Mitchell of LOST, True Blood’s Marian Klavino, Alesha Dixon, super-WAG Alex Curran and Mel B.
Mel B, who is a fan of Bunmi’s work, will host the official launch of her label shortly after Graduate Fashion Week. The collection, entitled Matriachy, will also be exhibited in Johannesburg during the World Cup.
In total 15 fashion students from the university will exhibit their designs at the catwalk show, no doubt many of whom will go on to bigger and better things.
