The University of East London in partnership with Birkbeck University of London is inviting people to attend a host of events and taster sessions as part of the UK’s largest festival of Leaning, Adult Learners Week taking place next week from 15 – 21 May.
UEL will be running information and advice sessions & CV clinics throughout the week in venues including the Stratford Advice Arcade and Skillzone also in Stratford, UEL’s Stratford Campus Library, High Street (outside Harrison & Gibson) in Ilford and the Idea store in Whitechapel.
Students and events have been nominated and sponsored by UEL’s Vice-Chancellor Patrick McGhee as well as a host of other staff. One lucky student nominated was Shamiso Bikwa, a combined Honours student in BA Early Childhood Studies.
Shamiso, 25, from Barking and Dagenham was nominated because of her experience as a mentor to primary school children. She said: "I’m delighted to be nominated. The challenges of academia are overwhelming at times, however, UEL has offered me unparalleled support to progress and it all started at Adult Learners Week."
Adult Learners Week is co-ordinated by NIACE, the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education and the aim is to encourage adults to think about taking up learning and take part in learning activities and events across England.
Julie Walker, Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) Co-ordinator at UEL said: "This year Adult Learners Week is set to be bigger and better than ever at UEL. The economic downturn has meant that people are looking to learn new skills and enhance their current ones to really transform their lives. We are keen to speak to you, so please come down and see what we have to offer, there is something for everyone!"
