Workshop for budding entrepreneurs is a success for the Alumni team

Wednesday 28 April 2010

Alumni Team

More than 100 alumni, students and staff took part in a Building Your Business & Your Personal Brand workshop which succeeded in providing budding entrepreneurs with invaluable advice with which to market themselves to potential employers and clients.

The enterprising event took place at the Docklands Campus on April 28 and was broadcast live online by a team from UEL’s distance learning unit, UELconnect to a live audience around the world.

Innovative speakers at the event included Professor Sonny Nwankwo, Director of UEL’s Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship, who addressed the importance of having the right mindset to reach entrepreneurial goals.

Top advice on how to run a successful company was given by Wendy Jackson, a former UEL student who graduated in Psychology and Marketing and now runs her own company, Bite Sized Marketing. Wendy spoke about the need for a strong client focus and researching everything thoroughly.

Thorsten Klein, Business Incubation Manager at UEL’s Knowledge Dock Business Centre and his colleague Neeta Barot, also helped the fledgling entrepreneurs by giving advice on the range of support and work placements schemes available to them.

Head of Development and Alumni, Dr Fariba Salehi said: “I’m pleased that this event was so well received and we plan to do more in the future. I’d like to thank everyone who took part and the speakers too for their fantastic advice.”

The Development and Alumni Office will be expanding its range of entrepreneurial and employability skills events over the coming year in response to the huge demand for similar workshops.
