Guide to East London

Under the guidance of cSPACE (a charitable organisation based at the University of East London’s Docklands campus) and with the help of staff and students from the university; a group of disadvantaged young people from East London have produced an award-winning guide to the area.

‘The Young Person’s Guide to East London’ is an interactive online guide which uses photographs, video footage and comment to present the most exciting and accessible activities in the area for 11-19 year olds.

Utilising workshops, site visits and support from professional photographers, teachers, youth leaders and staff and students from UEL, the project has received a London 2012 ‘Inspire Mark’ as one of ‘the most accessible, participative and stimulating projects to be inspired by the London 2012 Games’.

It has also been awarded £500 by communications charity Media Trust as part of its ‘Inspiring Voices’ campaign; a campaign designed to encourage disadvantaged communities to get their voices heard through digital media. Many of the young people involved in the project are from pupil referral units and youth offending teams.

Dr Loraine Leeson, Director of cSPACE and Visiting Research Fellow at UEL said: "We were thrilled that the guide won these awards. The young people are coming up with the most amazing content for the website; it has really come together to give a unique view of London that no-one has ever seen before”.
