Extract of Chila Burman's work

Former University of East London (UEL) PhD student, Ben Pitcher, has been short-listed for the prestigious British Sociological Association (BSA) Philip Abrams Memorial Prize.

The prize, which recognises the best first and sole-authored book within the discipline of Sociology, was set up to commemorate Professor Philip Abrams’s significant contribution to sociology and social policy research and to honour the most promising new British authors in this field.

Based in part on the PhD research which Ben completed at UEL in 2007, The Politics of Multiculturalism: Race and Racism in Contemporary Britain addresses some of the most important and controversial issues of our times - the politics of nationalism, the ‘War on Terror’, and why racism still pervades British society in the twenty-first century.

Ben, who now works as a lecturer in Sociology at the University of Westminster, said: 'I am very pleased to have been shortlisted for this prize. My book would not have been half as good if it wasn't for the inspiration and support of colleagues and friends in the Centre for Cultural Studies Research at UEL'.

The winner will be announced at the BSA Annual Conference which takes place in Glasgow in April.
