Extract of Chila Burman's work

Visual Autobiographies is an exhibition of work by students from the University of East London, art workshop participants from East London, and the artist Chila Burman; opening at Rich Mix Mezzanine Gallery on Monday 22 March.

Chila Burman, Leverhulme, Artist in Residence at the University of East London worked with social science students and staff throughout 2009 to explore visual interpretations of autobiographical ideas, drawing on students' academic work, personal histories, and social and political beliefs for their inspiration.

She also worked with UEL's Centre for Narrative Research on a project entitled: ‘You Are Here': East London Self-Portraits. The project investigated visual and verbal self-representations across a range of East London environments.

The new exhibition displays a selection of the images produced by students and research participants during this period alongside a small selection of pieces by Chila herself.

Chila says of the exhibition: “For an artist to hold a residency in a school of humanities and social sciences and in a centre for narrative research is truly unprecedented. It's been a highly challenging and emotional experience, the likes of which I shall never know again. This exhibition is the culmination of this experience and a fantastic opportunity for the students to display their work at a mainstream venue.”
