UEL plays major role in international sustainability conference

The Universiy of East London contributed a total of nine papers at a recent international conference on sustainable engineering.

The event, which took place in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, was the eighth annual international conference on sustainability in geotechnical and transportation engineering.

UEL staff and alumni joined 250 local and overseas researchers and academics at the conference, where they addressed sustainability in geotechnical and transportation engineering in Malaysia.

Two of the presented papers included Sediment Transport with a Hydrodynamic Perspective by Ravindra Jayaratne, Sarik Salim and Chitral Wijeyesekera, and Field Study of Urban Heat Island Effects from Asphalt Pavements by Chitral Wijeyesekera, John Walsh, Robert Allen and Helen Bailey.

Dr Ravindra Jayaratne, UEL Lecturer in Civil Engineering, said: "This was a memorable event and a unique opportunity for UEL staff and alumni in Malaysia to participate and present their research papers on sustainability in different sub-disciplines of civil engineering."
