UEL announces new Vice Chancellor

Professor Patrick McGhee

The University of East London (UEL) is delighted to announce that Professor Patrick McGhee has been appointed as its new Vice-Chancellor.

Professor McGhee is currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Central Lancashire, and was previously Dean of Cultural, Legal and Social Studies, University of Central Lancashire; Associate Dean and Head of Psychology, University of Bolton; and Head of Psychology, University of Derby. Prior to that he held academic positions at Sheffield Hallam University, Edge Hill University, and St George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London.

He is a member of the HEFCE Teaching Quality and Student Experience Committee and Chair of the North West Universities Association Learning and Teaching Strategy Group. A graduate of Glasgow and Oxford, he recently completed an executive development programme at Harvard Business School.

He is also a Chartered Health Psychologist and in 2009 was a winner of a National Teaching Fellowship from the HE Academy.

Mark Stephens, Chair of UEL’s Board of Governors, expressed his pleasure at the appointment. He said: “Professor McGhee has a distinguished record of achievement and we are confident that his appointment will enable us to enhance our considerable strengths in learning, teaching, research and knowledge exchange. His appointment has been widely welcomed by all parts of our community. He is one of a new generation of university leaders who draw upon direct experience of internationalism, technology and partnership in order to deliver on our commitment to inclusion and innovation. We are delighted that he is joining us”.

Professor McGhee said: “I am obviously very excited to be joining UEL at such an important time in its development. I am passionate about the potential of UEL to deliver outstanding opportunities to the learners, communities and businesses of the region. UEL’s distinctive strengths in its location, diversity, distance learning and Olympic and Paralympic engagement give it a unique role in the regeneration of the area. I look forward to working with my new colleagues and our students as we seek to enhance UEL’s reputation still further both nationally and internationally and in particular give our students a first class experience.”

Professor McGhee will take up his post on 1 February 2010.
