Liam Kane, Sathi Ludhianvi and Baroness Kingsmill awarded honorary doctorates at UEL’s first graduation ceremony

A host of leading public figures are to be awarded honorary doctorates at the first of six graduation ceremonies for the University of East London (UEL) taking place this Thursday, the 29th October.

Lord Rix, Chancellor of the University of East London, will confer honorary awards upon Liam Kane, Chief Executive of the East London Business Alliance (ELBA); Government Peer, Baroness Denise Kingsmill and well known writer and broadcaster, Sathi Ludhianvi.

Liam Kane is a key figure in the regeneration and redevelopment of east London. ELBA supports many initiatives covering employment and skills, mentoring in schools, health projects and support for social enterprises.

Liam Kane and Baroness Kingsmill will receive the award of Honorary Doctor of Business Administration, and Sathi Ludhianvi will receive the award of Honorary Doctor of Arts.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Barbican Centre in the City of London, will be attended by over 2,000 graduates and their families from UEL’s School of Computing, Information Technology and Engineering, celebrating their academic success.

UEL’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Susan Price, said: “Over 400 graduates in UEL’s School of Computing, Information Technology and Engineering will cross the Barbican Stage on Thursday. We are immensely proud of them, as well as, our honorary graduates; Liam Kane, who has done so much for the regeneration of east London, and Baroness Kingsmill and Sathi Ludhianvi who have worked tirelessly to tackle issues of social justice and inequality.”

Baroness Denise Kingsmill, whose career has encompassed periods as a leading employment lawyer and as a non-executive director of many companies, charities and government boards, was appointed as a life peer to the House of Lords in 2006.

Sathi Ludhianvi, who is particularly well known in the South Asian community in the UK and India, was the first Punjabi news editor on Sunrise Radio and multi-lingual discussion host on Kismat Radio.
