University of East London MA Fine Art and MA Contemporary Art & Design Practice students will be exhibiting their creative talent as part of an exhibition due to open on Thursday 3 September at UEL’s School of Architecture and Visual Arts at the Docklands Campus.
Six talented International MA students will be showcasing their projects as part of the MA Fine Art and MA Contemporary Art and Design Practice shows.
Martin Barrett, Programme Leader for Contemporary Art and Design Practice at UEL said: “I’m delighted that this is such an international and diverse show with artists representing different nationalities and age groups. The work on show covers a broad spectrum of contemporary concerns, reflecting the differences and similarities of experiences within a global context.”
Projects on display include Yiran Wu, 25, who is originally from Beijing and has produced a colourful photographic portfolio including a contemporary red book, a deliberate humorous reference to Mao's little Red Book of the Cultural Revolution. Yiran's book explores and contrasts the cities of London and Beijing from the perspective of someone who has lived in both cities. She said:
"I loved studying at UEL, I found it gave me more freedom to do my work really well. I also found it a great environment in which to learn and grow and this helped me to develop my work."
Other work on display includes photography and video installation, short narrative films inspired by the street culture of London in all its’ highs and lows, influences drawn from events and images of the city and other art forms that chart the changing urban landscapes in many Chinese cities as exemplified by the city of Guangzhou in Southern China.
The Fine Art MA show also includes work by artists such as Rima Chahou. Her graffiti inspired wall paintings reflect her upbringing in Beirut while Elisabeth Bond’s work is influenced from her time in Italy.
The show is open to the public from 3 to 6 September 2009 Mon – Fri 10:00am – 6:00pm and Sat and Sun 10:00am – 4:00pm.
