UEL takes a leap forward with its new dynamic dance studios

Wednesday 16 September 2009

The University of East London (UEL) will be launching two new state-of-the-art dance studios for their Institute of Performing Arts and Dance (IPAD) based at the innovative Trinity Buoy Wharf arts complex located in London’s Docklands area on September 25th.

Located just ten minutes from the Docklands Campus, overlooking the O2 arena and Canary Wharf, the two large dance studios are in the heart of one of the largest artistic and cultural sites in East London and next to the English National Opera warehouse.

Guests at the launch will be treated to UEL’s talented students on the BA (Hons) Dance: Urban Practice programme using choreography to illustrate two performances around the Trinity Buoy Wharf dock and also in one of the new studios.

UEL offers the first and only Higher Education teaching space devoted to Urban Dance Forms in the country and the Urban Practice programme is the fastest growing Dance degree in the UK. Now in its third year, it has tripled its intake this September.

IPAD Director, Mark O’Thomas said: “This is a significant step forward in both Dance and UEL being at the centre of a thriving creative community in East London. We started the degree because East London is fast becoming an international hub for urban dance innovation and we wanted to both provide a radical new approach to a Dance degree. We also wanted to offer students from all over the world the opportunity to continue their studies at a higher level. These amazing studios will give everyone a chance to participate – from those entering university for the first time, to Master’s and PhD level too.”

IPAD will also have support spaces, inside recycled brightly coloured steel containers. These include a green room, classroom and offices.

Trinity Buoy Wharf (TBW) provides space for artists and cultural events, both long and short term. It is currently home to around 350 artists and creative businesses.
