Tuesday 4 August 2009

Team UEL

Staff from the University of East London (UEL) geared up to take part in the London Triathlon 2009 – the biggest triathlon event in Europe on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August at the ExCel Centre in London.

Over 13,000 people from around the UK participated in the event which was sponsored mainly by Mazda along with a host of other organisations including Virgin Media and Speedo.

The UEL staff represented a host of Schools and services across the university including finance, health and bioscience, student services and UELconnect – UEL’s flexible distance and e-learning service.

David Cosford, Director of Sport at UEL said: “This is a great team effort and I’m proud of everyone and how hard they have trained to get here. There were eight UEL teams with groups of three people in each team. One person swam, another cycled and a third ran in the race. This event was all about participation, fun and enjoyment. We had a great team spirit, and we are already looking forward to next year’s event, with even more participants.”

In the near future, UEL will also be opening a Triathlon training club, which will be the first in Newham and open to external visitors.

UEL is already providing a range of professional health and sports science programmes and investing in major new facilities. David Cosford is working with the Students’ Union to set up ‘UELSports’ and provide a wider range of sporting activity for students and staff.
