
A leading authority in risk assessment at US Aerospace Tech Working Group will be the visiting Professor at the University of East London (UEL) School of Computing, IT and Engineering (CITE) this September.
Professor Feng Hsu, Top US expert on Integrated Risk Management at the ATWG has also worked previously as a lead engineer in risk analysis at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston for the space shuttle programme.
Professor Hsu leads the technical risk management on many key US space projects including the innovative James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) a large infrared telescope planned for launch in 2014. He is also supporting projects relating to finding sign of life on Mars.
At UEL, Professor Hsu will be supporting a range of activities under the newly created UEL research group SoS - (system of systems) which is a framework of supporting and evaluating complex systems based on interaction between people and machines, such as IT systems.
Professor Hsu will also be involved in further research, teaching SoS related topics and other collaborative projects. He was invited to come to UEL by Dr Hamid Jahankhani, Associate Dean of the School of Computing, IT and Engineering. Dr Jahankhani said: "We are developing links and alliances with reputable international organisations such as NASA as well as other universities and industries around the globe."
"As everyone knows, that the US space institution has vast experience in safety and risk analysis spanning decades. We are delighted that Professor Hsu will be a visiting professor at UEL, his expertise will enrich the experience for the students and we welcome his input."
Professor Hsu said: "I am looking forward to coming to UEL and supporting the new SoS group. As part of the group, I will be aiming to develop methods that can be applied to the long term sustainability aspects which are vital to the well being of our modern society nowadays. For example, how to ensure the safety & security of global systems in energy, financial and environmental areas that influence our everyday lives."
The 5th International Conference on Global Security, Safety & Sustainability, ICGS3'09 in September will also feature Professor Hsu, who will be giving a talk there.
This Annual International Conference is an established platform in which security, safety and sustainability issues are viewed from several global perspectives through dialogue between academics, students, government representatives, chief executives, security professionals, and research scientists from the UK and the world.
